Literature Text

February 1st:
the gray sky outside
creeps in my window to plant
the gray inside me

February 2nd:
fiery ice and snow
old shoes invite them inside
toes so cold they burn

February 3rd:
snowy sleety ice
interferes with daily life
kids rejoice, no school

February 4th:
featherlike, drifting
dancing in the crisp, cold winds
snowflakes journey on

February 5th:
winds make ice tinkle
snow crunches, fire crackles, pops
listen to winter

February 6th:
white deceit so pure
floating harmlessly to hide
deadly ice below

February 7th:
red scarves and black gloves
decorate skin as snowflakes
decorate the earth

February 8th:
bright, life-affirming,
yellow rays of doom for ice
I love you, sunshine

February 9th:
snowball fights, snowmen,
snow angels lining my yard,
winter of my youth

February 10th:
finding gloves and boots,
scraping ice, salting driveway
my winter today

February 11th:
snowflakes on my cheeks
howling winds breathe in my ears
winter welcomes me

February 12th:
dark mornings, gray days,
mysterious long, dark nights
cloak winter's secrets

February 13th:
sunshine in the air
bits of green beneath my feet
the promise of Spring

February 14th:
snowballs, hot cocoa
children's laughter ringing out
warmth in wintertime

February 15th:
headache, fever, chills
hacking, coughing, stuffy nose
winter's gifts to me

February 16th:
stirring chili pot
boiling water for cocoa
making my own Spring

February 17th:
melted snow feeds grass
warm breeze tickles buds on trees
can Springtime be far?

February 18th:
bright yellow warmth calls
sunshine steal my breath away
hope of Spring blooms forth

February 19th:
thick fur drapes my cat
thicker fur protects my dog
fake fur surrounds me

February 20th:
cold sluggish feeling
dark depressing grudging thoughts
winter in my heart

February 21st:
heavens open wide
thick, downy, white fluff showers
slowly carpet earth

Febraury 22nd:
like thick heavy chains
the cold harsh winter weather
drags down my spirit

February 23rd:
frost, where is your bite?
sunshine diminishes you
and brings hope to life

February 24th:
Spring serves up divine
poetic justice to make
winter hibernate

*Yes, I know most of my haikus don't really fit the spirit of the genre, but 24 haikus about winter so far? Cut me some slack! ^_~

February 25th:
dainty fragile drop
perfect crystal reflection
ice, pretty danger

February 26th:
soft white cottontail
flitting and dancing above
soft white cotton snow

February 27th:
bleak gray blankets earth
beauty slumbers underground
dreaming of release

February 28th:
breezes blow warmer
snow and ice become water
the first redbird sings

*Woohoo! I did it! A haiku a day for the month of February. (We'll pretend they all fit the real definition of haiku.) And I'm even going to throw in an extra one:

cold winds still blowing
heavens still snowing, but hark
kittens are coming

(Yes, my rotten cat went into heat and got out and ... )
I think these read like a diary of my mood during February. LOL! I do not like winter, thank you very much. And I found it a bit difficult to write so many of these based on that one theme. Now, I know I didn't capture the genre very well--sticking to the more common American concept of the 5-7-5 verses and straying from nature a bit in some of them instead of simply the minimalistic focus on an "epiphany" of nature, but ... eh, sue me. ^_^

I'm quite pleased that I did it, and I want to thank :iconknittingknots: for mentioning it in the first place!

P.S. It doesn't pay to dare me, does it, :icondragon-paragon: ?
